Skype Update Oddity

I have been issued a laptop at my new position.  Skype was already installed, but it was out of date.  I like to keep things up to date.  I suppose that’s why I became an IT professional.

Anyway, I opened Skype and asked it to check for updates.  It found one and I told it to download that update.  Now Skype doesn’t offer you a Save dialog where you might select where it saves that update.  It just gets to work.

When it was finished I assumed it would either just do the update or ask me if I wanted it to run it.  Wishful thinking.

So I thought maybe if I re-open Skype it will change its tune.  Nope.  Searching for updates just repeats the mystery download.

No problem.  It probably just downloaded the installer into my Downloads folder, right?  Ha!  Anywhere in my Home directory?  Ha!  Um, Skype’s application folder?  The temp folder on C?

I finally located it in what I assume to be the original installing user’s Downloads folder.  This may be a problem for you if you don’t have administrative rights on the machine you are using since each user is supposed to be restricted to their own Home hierarchy.

In short you might be better off just visiting the Skype Web site and downloading the installer directly.  Then you can save it where ever you want.  Well, where ever you want where you have permissions to do so.

Have fun with that.
