Power of the Electric Press

As you may recall, I did a big write-up on the weird recent definitions of the word Update as evidenced by the behaviors of some of the more prominent computer and software companies.  You can read that entire post here.

In short, Apple and Microsoft both did some rather nefarious things under the guise of so-called updates.  For Apple, the maneuver was to include the new version of Safari 3 as an update when the Apple Software Update did its update check—even if the machine in question did not have Safari installed.

I felt betrayed.  I even went so far as to write to a targeted high-level Apple person to make my compaint known.  They never responded; however, it has come to my attention that my voice has been heard and the universe is that much closer to harmony.

The strong-arm breaks; it does not bend.
The strong-arm breaks; it does not bend.

Thank you, Apple.  We can be friends again.  I really hated losing a friendship that started in 1982 (Apple II and Wizardry).  I’m glad we were able to resolve this little disagreement.  Or at least nearly resolve it.  The check box should be unchecked by default.  One ought to choose to load Safari.  And how about a method to ignore this offer for good?  Ok.  Baby steps.

I’m going to keep my eye on you though.  Trust is not back to 100 per cent.  Four months is a long time and this is a small gesture.  I know; I know: baby steps.

Thanks, Apple.
