Opera flickr Workaround

I have been having trouble signing into flickr for a long time now.  As a matter of fact, I mostly stopped using flickr because of this issue.

My initial tests pointed to a third-party cookie issue.  It seemed that either flickr was requiring them or Opera was misinterpreting non-third-party cookies as though they were third-party cookies.

A recent test has shown this to be incorrect.  The problem does relate to the cookies but in the end you will be able to sign into flickr with third-party cookies globally disabled using Opera.

Here is my workaround.  It is very simple.

When you attempt to sign into flickr you will be taken to a page showing this:

Cookie Error Page
Cookie Error Page

Clicking on the login link or returning to flickr’s home page and clicking the login link or just going to the login page directly will all take you into this silly loop from which you will not be able to extract yourself.

What you may not notice is the small redirect page which flashed just before this cookie error page.  Go back one page (using a keyboard shortcut, a mouse gesture, or your browser’s back button) and you will see a page which reads:

If you are seeing this page, your browser settings prevent you from automatically redirecting to a new URL.

Please click here to continue.

Click there.

You have successfully worked around the issue.  Congratulations.

    1. No problem. It was driving me crazy too.

So, are you not able to find the redirect page I mention? Are you not able to sign in?

I am able to use this workaround on Linux, Mac, and Windows versions of Opera currently.

  1. I’m also stuck in this ever dispiriting loop of despair using Opera v10.01 on my MacBook with OS X 10.6.2. As with Zoe when I click to go back one page, (and clicking back twice rapidly), I just get the login screen again and around I go again … again … and again.

Flickr works fine with Safari. I could never have a computer with just Opera as the only browser, despite being an Opera user since 1994. Sadly whenever I report issues like this at the Opera Forum either the thread is immediately closed by mods or one of the regular users jumps on me and criticises calling me an Apple or Microsoft fanboy. Truth is I love Opera and recommend to all my family and friends but always get reports back telling me of problems like this. Sad!

    1. What a bummer. You can try to disable redirects to see if that allows you to access the above page. I don’t know if they use an HTTP or a Javascript redirect but this is how to turn each off (test one then try the other then try both).

First try disabling HTTP redirects in Tools —> Preferences —> Advanced —> Network —> Enable automatic redirection (uncheck it, obviously)

If that doesn’t do it, try disabling Javascript in the Edit Site Preferences dialog for the flickr page.

(On the Network tab of the Site Preferences dialog is also the Enable automatic redirection option if you want to turn it off for this specific site.)

So, that should give you a few combinations to see if you can’t set up your Opera to manage that login page.

Oh, and update your Opera. 10.10 just came out.

(I have redirection enabled globally with no specific site restrictions, and I am still able to use my above trick on Mac OSX; Windows XP, Vista, & Server 2003; and Ubuntu 8.10, 9.04, & 9.10. This method has been working since at least 9.something.)

  2. Have been bothered by this for a while without finding any solution (Opera 10.10 Portable), but disabling Javascript did the trick for blogger.com – Thanks a lot!!
